“Exceptionally entertaining and provocative.” –Kirkus Reviews.
D-Day never happened. Instead, a German invasion fleet--the largest armada in history--sets sail for Great Britain.
Great Britain has not been invaded in 900 years. But it is 1942, and five thousand ships carrying two hundred thousand soldiers—have just left the German coast and the coast of occupied France. The Third Reich’s armada will cross the English Channel and attempt to conquer the United Kingdom. Hitler’s bold stroke will end World War II with Germany master of all of Europe.
The British are not alone. An American army has been in England since Pearl Harbor but the Yanks are raw and ill-equipped. In command of the Americans is General Wilson Clay, who will drive his soldiers to their limits. He is determined to enter history as one of its greatest commanders.
S-Day is the story of a desperate battle, of heroism and brutality, and of an American general’s agonizing decision to use the ultimate weapon of war.

I'm a sci-fi fan, and one of my favorite genres is alternative history. I love a well researched and well told What If story. What if instead of disastrous invasion of Russia, Hitler had turned his victorious European forces on England? And what if a nascent American Expeditionary Force, relegated to an obscure sector of English coast and lead by a Patton-esque commander, is forced to fight those German invaders? S Day is told in the form of a memoir of General Wilson Clay, the American commander, being written by Colonel Royce, Clay's wartime aide. Royce's research reveals the forces, fears, and strategy behind the defense of Britain as it also reveals General Clay as a human being and leader committed to that defense at all costs. The militaria and English countryside in S Day are well researched and vividly described, and the tale told is satisfying. I think most alternate history readers will find S Day an entertaining, and maybe even enlightening, read.

This story conveys the horror of war from a human perspective. It may seem an aggrandizement of the central character but the possibilities presented could have happened. It was entertaining.
I liked the character development as much as the plot. The book was a page turner that I read in less than two days.
The book is well researched, written entirely in the 1st person, it's generally entertaining, especially for those who are not obsessed with the minutia of the WWII genre. I do feel the ultimate outcome of the story is consistent with the history of the time and the personal beliefs the historical figures portrayed, most notably Churchill and Alexander.
This is one of the better Germany Invades England novels, based upon the premise that England lost the battle of British, giving the Luftwaffe air supremacy. The author concerned more on the people than on the weapons and tactics, making the tale more real and immediate.
While the ending was a bit of a Deus ex machina, it still came as a surprise.
The book wasn't bad. It's told in a narrative where main character is telling a story describing interviews with fictional characters about their experiences during a German invasion of England during WW2. He also talks of his commanding general's experiences. Some of the interviews are boring but he keeps the suspense going as to whether the invasion was successful. A good read overall.
Instead of invading Russia in the summer of 1941 Hitler decides to knock England out of the war with a full-scale invasion in the spring of 1942. Awaiting the German armada is a hastily assembled American Expeditionary Force and the war-weary Brits. The story is told from the point of view of the American commanding general's aide, Col. Royce. Royce tells more than the story of the invasion as he examines the motives, mistakes, loves, fears, and strategy of General Wilson Clay, a flawed but fearless American leader determined that Britain will not fall to the Nazis. As a fan of alternate history I can tell you that this is one of the best the genre has to offer. Stewart's spins on historical fact make this novel all the more compelling. For instance, Clay and his British superiors have the same arguments about meeting the invaders on the beach that Rommel and Hitler had in the real war. Also, the real-life allies' 'Operation Fortitude' is turned into a German ruse to fool the allied armies as to where the blow will land. The weakness of this book lies in it's dealing with the war in the whole, outside of the battle. The final outcome the alternate World War is only metioned in passing and isn't as satisfying as it could be. That aside, 'S-Day' is a lot of fun. I looked for nearly four years before I found a copy of this book and it was well worth the wait.
I truly enjoyed this tale of alternate history very much. The fictional General Wilson Clay is a thinly disguised George Patton leading an ill prepared allied force in the defense of England as the Nazis invade. It was very well told, highly detailed and extremely vivid. You could see the scenes play out in your imagination.
A really enjoyable read. It would make a great television mini series.
